ENSEMBLE ARTS PHILLY PRESENTS MULTIFACETED JAZZ PIANIST AND COMPOSER EMMET COHEN WITH THE EMMET COHEN TRIO

MARCH 14, 2024, AT THE KIMMEL CENTER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (February 6, 2024) – Ensemble Arts Philly, the new presenting brand of the Kimmel Cultural Campus and The Philadelphia Orchestra, welcomes one of the most dynamic young musicians today, Emmet Cohen, leading the Emmet Cohen Trio inside the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ Perelman Theater on March 14, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.

Emerging as one of his generation’s pivotal figures in music and related arts, Emmet Cohen became a recognized prodigy at a young age. While a vibrant solo performer, Cohen leads his namesake ensemble and is in constant demand as a sideman. Possessing a fluid technique, an innovative tonal palette, and extensive repertoire, Cohen plays with the command of a seasoned veteran and the passion of an artist fully devoted to his work. He has noted that playing jazz is “about communicating the deepest levels of humanity and individuality.”

“Jazz resonates deeply with audiences across geographic and social boundaries, inspiring connection and serving as a testament to the power of the arts,” said Frances Egler, Vice President of Theatrical Programming and Presentations. “We are honored to have Emmet Cohen and his fellow musicians as part of our jazz season, representing young artists’ dedication to preserving and renewing the vitality of this genre.”

Cohen is committed to the intergenerational transfer of artistic knowledge, history, and traditions in jazz. He serves as both producer and pianist for each album of his “Masters Legacy Series” – a celebratory set of recordings and interviews honoring legendary jazz musicians including Benny Golson, Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb and George Coleman. His goal for this landmark, ongoing project is to provide musicians of multiple generations a forum to transfer the unwritten folklore of America’s unique musical idiom on to the next generations.

Cohen’s keyboard artistry has garnered numerous accolades from the international jazz community. Cohen placed first in both the Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida (2011) and the American Pianist Association Jazz Competition (2014). Cohen has appeared in world-renowned jazz events, including the Newport, Monterey, North Sea, Bern, Edinburgh, Detroit, and Jerusalem jazz festivals, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He appears regularly at Jazz at Lincoln Center and at major jazz clubs in New York and London. He is also a member of Christian McBride’s trio “Tip City,” the “Herlin Riley Quartet” and the “Ali Jackson Trio,” and serves as a pianist and music director for jazz vocalist and television personality, Lea DeLaria.
