Ensemble Arts Presents

The Rocky Horror Picture Show 49th Anniversary Spectacular Tour

August 29, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (August 29, 2024) – Ensemble Arts Philly is thrilled to present The Rocky Horror Picture Show 49th Anniversary Spectacular Tour at the Miller Theater on October 29, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. Join the original ‘Brad Majors’ – Barry Bostwick – for a special screening of the original and unedited movie with a local, Philly-based shadow cast – Transylvanian Nipple Productions – and audience participation!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the longest-running theatrical release in film history. The iconic little movie that conquered Hollywood stars Tim Curry as the devious and fabulous Frank-N-Furter, Meatloaf, Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as everybody’s favorite nerdy couple – Brad and Janet – and the film’s creator Richard O’Brien as Riff Raff. The Anniversary Spectacular Tour gives fans the chance to experience in-person this very interactive one-of-a-kind musical.

“We’re excited to showcase the rich legacy of this cult classic in cinema, bringing it to the stage featuring the incredible Barry Bostwick,” said Frances Egler, Vice President of Theatrical Programming and Presentations. “This anniversary spectacular is more than just a stage show. It's a tribute to the film that challenged norms, celebrated individuality, and introduced mainstream audiences to a delightfully eccentric world.”

Bostwick explains why The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of film history’s most enduring classics: “It’s fun, noisy and rude and only exists today because of the dedicated fan base and incredible ‘shadow casts’ from around the world. They make it spectacular entertainment every show. It is nicely naughty!!! They bring the party. They invite you to participate. It’s rock and roll!!!” said Bostwick.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is notable for its fans’ devotion to call-back lines and dressing up as the characters. The musical, titled The Rocky Horror Show, ran for 2,960 performances and won the 1973 Evening Standard Theater Award for Best Musical. The film’s initial reception in 1975 was extremely negative, but soon after attained a cult following as audiences began participating and performing alongside the film. The “shadow cast” mimed the actions on screen above and behind them, while lip-syncing the characters’ lines. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the U.S National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

The Rocky Horror Picture Show musical is widely hailed to have been an influence on the countercultural and sexual liberation movements that followed the 1960s. It was one of the first popular musicals to depict fluid sexuality during a time of division between generations and a lack of sexual difference acceptance.

Winning Golden Globe, Tony, and Peabody awards for a long and multi-faceted career, Bostwick continues to work in all genres with recently released films The Incredibles 2, Grand Daddy Day Care, Bigger Fatter Liar, A Mermaid’s Tale, Three Days In August, among others, as well as recent TV offerings on Will And Grace, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Still The King, Signed Sealed and Delivered for Hallmark, and Great Performances on PBS Ellis Island: The Dream Of America

Bostwick is probably best known for playing Brad Majors in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Mayor Randall Winston in the long-running sitcom, Spin City; and creating the role of Danny Zuko in the original Broadway production of Grease, receiving his first of three Tony nominations.
