Orrin Evans and The Captain Black Big Band

November 29, 2024  at 7:30PM

Philly jazz comes home!

Boasting a raw, vigorous sound, a raucous, unpredictable personality, and a membership ranging from elders to rising stars, the 2x GRAMMY-nominated Captain Black Big Band (CBBB) led by Philadelphia native Orrin Evans has retained the jazz world's rapt attention since their 2011 debut.

In those 15 years, CBBB has become one of the most vital big bands on the modern jazz scene. That’s no surprise given the leadership,  irresistable personality, and ambassadorship of pianist/composer Orrin Evans, who imbues the ensemble with his distinctively bold, bracing sensibility. From its beginnings at Philly’s own Chris’ Jazz Cafe through its long-running Monday night residency at New York’s Smoke Jazz & Supper Club, the band has evolved into a tightrope-walking unit whose daring approach lends the music an exhilarating edge. To celebrate the 2024 release of Walk a Milk in My Shoe, CBBB are joined by Philly-based vocalist Joanna Pascale and vocalist Paul Jost, plus GRAMMY-winning Philadelphia-born vocalist Bilal, a dynamic performer who seasons his sound with a rich mix of gospel, jazz, soul, blues, and hip-hop. Tickets are limited for this one-night-only event—order now!

Four stars! Evans in hometown party mode, offering a spirit of openness and ease to the musical family that gave it to him first. This musical exuberance blurs boundaries…if you’re hearing it, you’re family.

“Exhilarating! Hard-punching, fervent swing…bright staccato riff-melodies full of snappy solos and dizzying time shifts… the sort of hooky groover that embodies the Captain Black fusion of party spirit and dangerous adventure.

This town hall meeting of a band makes the kind of jazz that nearly everyone could agree to call jazz. After all the rough-and-tumble, the unapologetic swing, the energy spent trying to ride such an unruly beast of a band, it hits like a deep tissue massage, aching and cathartic.
